Las colecciones del Museo del Prado tienen un origen múltiple. En principio, fue la antigua colección de los Reyes de España, una colección realizada en los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII y hasta la inauguración del Museo en 1819. Después de esa fecha, al Museo del Prado se ha ido agregando colecciones procedentes de instituciones ya desaparecidas, como por ejemplo el Museo de la Trinidad, que llevó al museo un buen número de obras de origen eclesiástico, o el Museo de Arte Moderno, que nos aportó los fondos de pintura de finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX. Aparte de eso, desde su fundación en 1819, el Museo del Prado ha adquirido obras y ha recibido legados y donaciones diversas. Y todo ello es lo que hace el conjunto de las colecciones actuales del Museo del Prado.

*Presentation of the Museum’s Collection*
The collections of the Museo del Prado have a range of different origins. It was initially the former collection of the Spanish monarchy, a collection assembled in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, up to the time of the Museum’s opening in 1819. After that date the Museo del Prado added collections from defunct institutions, such as the Museo de la Trinidad which contributed a large number of works of ecclesiastical origin, or the Museo de Arte Moderno which brought us holdings of late 19th- and early 20th-century painting. Aside from that, since its foundation in 1819 the Museo del Prado has acquired works and has received different bequests and donations. All this together constitutes the present collections of the Museo del Prado.
